Foreign Media Department

The Foreign Media Department (General Directorate) is a sub-division of the Undersecretary for Press and Information of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. This department oversees the activities of the posted and visiting foreign journalists in the country and is also responsible for translations of important articles dealing with Iran and major international topics published by leading foreign press and Internet news sites in various languages.
This department is made up of following sections:

A. Specialists and Translation Section:
Experts and translators who are specialists on various the affairs of particular countries and regions including America, Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa, Middle east and Arab World, review and translate articles and commentaries from more than 100 newspapers and periodicals published in English, French, German, Italian, Arabic, Spanish, Russian, Japanese and Turkish.

B. Bulletin Section:
In this office the important translated articles and commentaries are compiled in various bulletin formats and sent to relevant major state decision making bodies and research and scientific centers.

The following bulletins were published and distributed in 2010:

  1. World media weekly (Iran and world events) 50 issues
  2. Iran from the perspective of leading foreign press (monthly) 12 issues
  3. World of Islam from western perspective 12 issues
  4. Cultural and social events (monthly) 12 issues
  5. Special events (periodical) 4 issues

C. Data Bank:
Not all the translated articles and commentaries are put in the above mentioned bulletins. Those items which are not fond relevant to be included in the said bulletins are saved in a special data bank. This data bank, because of its unique information processing system is one of the most helpful data banks in the country. Interested individuals and research centers can obtain their required information very easily and in a quick manner from this data bank. Currently more than 90,000 articles translated from more than 100 newspapers are being kept in this data bank and in average some 20 articles are added daily to this valuable collection.
In addition to this reach collection of translated articles all bulletins published by this department are kept in the data bank.

How to use the data bank

Students and interested researchers by presenting supporting documents and ID cards can personally refer to this department or through Internet (in very near future) can have access to the data bank and the published bulletins. This center provides services 5 days a week (Saturday-Wednesday) from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

 D. Foreign Reporters Section:
This section is responsible for preparing the authorization letter required to obtain Press Visa for those foreign journalists who are posted to Iran as well as roving reporters and correspondents. In addition to the above, this section facilitates the official centenary of the journalists who are officially invited to the country and makes necessary arrangements for interviews with Iranian state officials upon the arrival of the journalists.
This section also issues the permission for the companies which provide services to foreign journalists.
The service provider companies, under the supervision of this department get in touch with all concerned state authorities and make arrangements for interviews and if asked, provide guides and translators to facilitate the works of the foreign journalists.
Overseeing the activities of representative office of all foreign media and news agencies in Iran is also the responsibility of this section. Currently 123 media representative offices from 31 countries are functioning in Iran and are engaged in news gathering and dispatching from Iran.

 E. Press inflow and outflow Supervision Section
The main responsibilities of this section are as follows:

  1. Overseeing the entry and clearance of foreign newspapers and periodicals from the customs.
  2. Issuing the entry and distribution permit for foreign newspapers and periodicals for press institutions (licensed cultural enterprises).
  3. Authorizing the purchase and subscription of foreign newspapers and periodicals for real and legal entities upon presentation of performa invoice by the applicants
  4. permissions to international curriers handling documents and parcels
